HII NI MOJA YA POSTI ALIYOIWEKA MHADHIRI Bwocha Nyagemi Bwocha BAADA YA KUPOKEA TAARIFA HIZO
Thursday July 24th. It is half past eight in the morning, I'm in Tarime, just about to leave for Kisii when my brother cum colleague Alfred Onganga asks me whether I had recently been in touch with Jactan. I reply in the negative. I then experience some uneasy sense of foreboding. Before I muster guts to push Ong'ang'a to say what he wanted about Jactan, his message drops in my WhatsApp account. A voice in my heart nudges me to read it.
Another in my head begs me not to. I put on my shoes, brush my teeth then before I go for breakfast, the conflict between the two antagonistic voices intensifies. The heart wins over the head as has often. So I sit on the cosy bed, reach for my Samsung Galaxy and tap on my brother's text. Three words everyone would pray avoid flash on the screen: Jactan is dead! I am dumbfounded, nay, shocked!
Being more Bill than Ruto himself, my cheeks are wet, my eyes red, my nose runny, my heartbeat fast...! Jactan Mpinge was our brother, our friend, not just our student of literature. I used to meet him at Ong'ang'a's office when I was new in Tanzania. He later became my best student cum friend whose research in oral literature I supervised. He had even invited me to visit him in Iringa, it's never to be! That he had severe headache paralysis and death within the same day left us speechless! I have never shed so many tears in the recent past.
My appetite died all Thursday! I informed my brother and friend the grandson of Mojo, Obala Musumba who kept quiet for a long time then wondered what could have killed such a promising young man with his best days ahead! I chatted with Reinfrida Akangumisa who didn't know what to do but just asked God to receive Jactan after his sojourn in purgatory. I mourn you tonight Jactan, rest in peace comrade and take regards both to my father Nyagemi Bwocha and my wife/grandma Nyaboke Nyagemi.
MUNGU AILAZE ROHO YA MAREHEMU PAHALA PEMA PEPONI
